WiMedia Alliance Kicks Off Interoperability Testing Events7 March 2006
SAN RAMON, Calif., Jan. 5 -- The WiMedia(TM) Alliance today announced that its premiere interoperability testing event will be held January 23, 2006. As the first of several such planned activities, the event will bring together the Alliance's WiMedia Ultra-Wideband (UWB) chip manufacturers to establish communication between chipsets built by different companies. Participating Alliance members will also contribute to the construction and refinement of the test process that will ultimately be used for the official WiMedia Alliance Certification Program. Launching the testing event program is a direct result of the WiMedia Alliance's continued commitment to bring industry-interoperable UWB products to market. While the January session marks the first formal WiMedia testing event, some members have already laid the groundwork through preliminary testing at a lab sponsored by Intel Corporation. "We were very pleased to see both the advanced state of the companies' designs as well as the level of success achieved during preliminary testing," commented Brad Hosler, chairman of the WiMedia Alliance Certification and Interoperability Committee and Intel representative. "Now that we have a formal industry framework for these events, we anticipate extremely productive sessions with strong participation as companies prepare to ready devices for certification." Following completion of its scheduled interoperability events, the WiMedia Alliance presently expects to implement formal device certification during the second half of 2006. All WiMedia Alliance members with functional chipsets are invited to participate in the interoperability events. These events present the important opportunity to test WiMedia-based devices from different vendors during the pre-certification phase. Interoperability testing is a key step in transitioning from formal technical specifications to a fully operational multi-vendor standard. By verifying the interoperability of the final product implementations, the program provides the most stringent test of the technical specifications, as well as the test that is most relevant for end-users. About The WiMedia Alliance The WiMedia Alliance is a not-for-profit open industry association that promotes and enables the rapid adoption, regulation, standardization and multi-vendor interoperability of ultra-wideband (UWB) worldwide. The basis for the industry's first UWB standards (published by Ecma International), WiMedia UWB is optimized for wireless personal-area networks delivering high-speed (480Mbps and beyond), low-power multimedia capabilities for the PC, CE, mobile and automotive market segments. Emphasizing peaceful coexistence with other wireless services, the WiMedia UWB common radio platform is designed to operate with application stacks developed by the 1394 Trade Association Wireless Working Group, the Certified Wireless USB Promoter Group and the Bluetooth-SIG. WiMedia's board members include Alereon, HP, Intel, Kodak, Microsoft, Nokia, Philips, Samsung Electronics, Sony, STMicroelectronics, Staccato Communications, Texas Instruments and Wisair.
