Ultra-High Integration EPIC SBC Combines 2.0GHz CPU Performance With Advanced Data Acquisition on a Single Board

6 April 2006

Diamond Systems Corporation, a leading supplier of PC/104 I/O modules and highly integrated single board computers (SBCs) that include on-board data acquisition today announced the Poseidon SBC, the industry's highest performance EPIC form factor SBC with integrated data acquisition. Poseidon combines the VIA Eden(R) ULV or VIA C7(R) processor running at speeds up to 2.0GHz with Diamond Systems' patented automatically autocalibrating A/D circuitry on a single board. This combination saves space and weight, reduces cost and improves reliability in embedded applications requiring high CPU performance and data acquisition capability, such as military systems, transportation systems, in-vehicle control, sophisticated medical instruments and industrial control systems.

"Designers wishing to save space and lower costs by selecting a single board computer with built-in data acquisition have always had to compromise, either with a lower performance processor or less capable data acquisition," said Jonathan Miller, President of Diamond Systems. "With Poseidon, designers get a state of the art 2.0GHz processor, up-to-date features like USB 2.0, gigabit Ethernet and S-ATA mass storage, along with Diamond Systems' advanced automatically autocalibrating A/D interface. It's control without compromise."

The new Poseidon SBC is offered with either a fanless 1.0GHz VIA Eden ULV or 2.0GHz VIA C7 processor, both with 256KB on-chip cache and 400MHz front side bus. The board comes with either 256MB or 512MB 533MHz DDR2 RAM soldered on the board for improved resistance to shock and vibration. The board also features the VIA CX700 integrated digital media chipset, the new single-chip core logic from VIA that boasts the high performance VIA UniChrome(TM) Pro 2D/3D graphics controller with integral MPEG-2 hardware acceleration, CRT and LVDS flat panel support and dual independent display capability. The Poseidon SBC also provides extended connectivity support, including four USB 2.0 ports, 4 RS232 serial ports (two with RS422/485 capability), and both IDE and S-ATA hard drive interfaces. For a network interface, the board has an Intel 82541 Gigabit Ethernet controller offering full compatibility with 10/100/1000M bps networks.

"We are delighted that Diamond Systems selected our high performance, highly efficient processor platforms to power their industry-leading Poseidon SBC," said Epan Wu, Deputy Director, CPU Product Marketing for VIA Technologies, Inc. "With all that power and functionality, and even data acquisition circuitry, packed into a small form factor EPIC SBC, Poseidon provides strong evidence of how VIA's advances in processor design and chipset integration enable a new class of embedded computing devices."

Poseidon's data acquisition circuit incorporates the features and capabilities of the industry-leading Diamond MM-32X-AT board, including 32 16- bit analog inputs with a 250KHz sampling rate, 4 12-bit analog outputs, 24 programmable digital I/O lines and two counter/timers. The analog inputs are designed to automatically autocalibrate without user intervention whenever the ambient temperature changes, assuring the highest level of accuracy across the entire extended operating temperature range of the board.

With the 1.0GHz VIA Eden ULV processor, Poseidon operates fanless across an extended operating temperature range of -40 C to +85 C. Typical power consumption for the board will be under 10 watts. With the 2.0GHz VIA C7 processor, Poseidon operates with a fan from -20 C to +70 C.

Poseidon will be available for initial delivery in Q2, 2006 with production shipments beginning in Q3, 2006. Versions will be available with and without data acquisition. Prices start under $700 in quantity 1-9. Volume discounts are available.
