Tri-Vision V-Chip licensed to TTE Corporation27 January 2006
Tri-Vision International Ltd./Ltée (TSX:TVL) today announced that it has licensed its Canadian Patent No. 2,179,474 to TTE Corporation of the United States. TTE, "the world's largest TV manufacturer", is a joint venture established in 2004 between Thomson Multimedia SA of France and TCL International Holdings Limited of Hong Kong. The agreement includes a time-limited option to license Tri-Vision's United States Patent No. 5,828,402. The license is valid through the expiration of the patent in 2016. The agreement also completes compensation to Tri-Vision for past sales of RCA branded television sets in Canada. "The licensing of the extremely popular RCA brand in Canada takes us very close to our stated goal of licensing 100 percent of the televisions sold in this country and we are confident we will quickly license the relatively small numbers of televisions remaining," said Najmul H. Siddiqui, Chairman and CEO. "More important, we are beginning to see the results of our focus and organizational plan to produce the same licensing success for our US Patent." Companies which have acquired V-chip licenses for Canada and/or for the U.S. include: Sony, Hitachi, Sanyo, Philips, JVC, Matsushita, Sharp, Pioneer, Apex Digital, Samsung, LG Electronics, Funai, Orion, Toshiba, Eastech, Erae Electronics, Seiko Epson, Shenzhen KXD, Newlane, Xiamen, Konka, Optoma, Coretronic, ViewSonic and many others. As part of the transition to a digital television broadcast system in the United States, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has mandated new rules to ensure that the V-chip can be modified in all digital television receiver products. Tri-Vision's open V-chip is the only known, patented technology capable of accepting modified or new rating systems. The FCC rules, which include a transition period, became effective on November 4, 2004 and as a result all digital television receiver products must include open V-chip by March 15, 2006.
