Successful Return-To-Retail Electronics Recycling Program Expanded

6 February 2005

Today, Hartco Corporation (TSX: HCC) announces that old and non-functioning electronic products destined for disposal can now be taken for recycling to any CompuSmart location in Calgary or Edmonton. Through the "Be CompuSmart" e-Waste program, residents and businesses can bring in their computers, laptops, printers, monitors and TVs for recycling at no cost. CompuSmart also accepts other types of electronics for recycling, such as VCRs and stereos, for a nominal fee ranging from $1 to $5.

"Be CompuSmart" was launched in Calgary in October 2003 through a partnership between CompuSmart and San Jose-based recycler Maxus Technology. Since then, over 25,000 kilograms of e-Waste have been collected. Under Alberta's new electronics recycling program, which came into effect on February 1st, these volumes are expected to increase considerably. "This program is a win-win proposition," said Jeffrey Hart, Executive Vice President of Hartco Corporation. "It's easy, convenient for our customers and good for the environment." The program is also consistent with CompuSmart's own environmental values. "As a retailer, we are committed to encouraging customers to recycle their electronics once they're no longer useful," said Mr. Hart.

According to Shelley Whatmore, President and co-founder of Maxus Technology, the program complements North America-wide e-Waste recycling collection initiatives the company has been working on. "Maxus Technology is dedicated to environmental responsibility. A return-to-retail program like this allows us to bring our recycling capabilities directly to the consumer in
a convenient way, diverting electronics from landfill sites," she explained. "This program is a logical extension of the Alberta Recycling Program recently launched, providing Albertans with practical and accessible locations for e-Waste recycling year-round."
