STMicroelectronics Wins 'Power IC of the Year' in EDN Magazine 'Innovation of the Year 2005' Awards6 April 2006
At the 16th Annual EDN Innovation Awards ceremony held in San Jose on April 3, 2006, STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM) won the title of Power IC of the year for its recently released STw4141 dc/dc converter. EDN's Innovation Awards aim to honor outstanding electronic products, technologies, and professionals, as selected by a peer jury of engineers and engineering managers worldwide. "I congratulate STMicroelectronics in winning this award," said Maury Wright, EDN Editor-in-Chief. "The advancements that distinguish the winners of the annual EDN Innovation program may seem subtle -- minimally low power, a slight reduction in cost, the ability to discern a faster signal, or the gateway to new semiconductor processes -- but they represent hard-won engineering victories that make all the difference in the latest compelling consumer products, computers, and communication systems." "ST is the world's leading supplier of semiconductor products for power conversion," said Eric Aussedat, General Manager of ST's Cellular Communications Division. "This award is further recognition of ST's ability to bring leading-edge product to market in the field of mobile devices. The STw4141 will make a significant contribution towards a reduced Bill-of- Materials for cell phone manufacturers, enabling them to bring out world- beating mobile products that are smaller, cheaper and provide even longer battery life." For the first time in the industry, ST's patented STw4141 dc/dc converter allows two different output voltages to be generated using a single external coil, reducing both the number of parts in pc-board area and manufacturing cost in applications that require two separate power rails. The device was specifically designed to supply digital baseband and multimedia processors in portable applications such as mobile phones, digital still cameras, and PDAs, where designers operate under tight pc-board area, cost, and power-consumption constraints. In addition to the EDN award, the STw4141 was also chosen as a runner up in the 2006 Design News Golden Mousetrap Awards in the Power Management and Control category. Additionally, ST's family of configurable SoCs (System-on-Chip), called SPEAr (Structured Processor Enhanced Architecture), was also a finalist for an EDN Innovation award, in the category of ASSPs (Application Specific Standard Products) and SoCs. SPEAr offers a unique approach to the development of configurable SoCs, combining cost savings and shorter time-to-market of application-standard products (ASSP) with maximum flexibility of application- specific ICs (ASIC). As a result, the device allows access to state-of-the-art technology, together with high performance and full customization addressing a variety of applications such as digital engines for printers, scanners and other embedded control applications.
