RoadRunners stuck in neutral

21 November 2005

‘RUNNERS REWIND: The Phoenix RoadRunners were swept by the Utah Grizzlies in a two-game series at the E-Center in West Valley City, Utah on Friday and Saturday. Phoenix is currently sixth in the West Division with eight points, 13 points behind the first place Idaho Steelheads.

Friday, Barret Ehgoetz tallied the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal 13:42 into the third period and added an assist to lead the Utah Grizzlies to a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix RoadRunners before 3703 at the E-Center.

After a scoreless first period, Utah (9-3-0) struck first when Erkki Rajamaki received the puck in the slot from Ehgoetz and beat RoadRunners goaltender Mike Mole with a shot over the blocker at 17:46 of the second period to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead.

Phoenix (3-7-2) netted the equalizer just 4:50 into the third period. Chris Hodgson re-directed Dusty Demianiuk's shot from the right point and past Utah's goaltender Justin Eddy to tie the game at 1-1. However, Eghoetz sealed the win when his wrist shot from the high slot trickled off Mole's glove and into the net with 6:18 remaining in regulation to give the Grizzlies a 2-1 win.

Utah out-shot Phoenix 41-21. Mole stopped 39 shots in dropping to 0-5-2 on the season. The RoadRunners went 0-2 on the power play and held the Grizzlies to 0-3.

Saturday, James Laux tallied a power play goal and two assists all in the first period to set the tone for the game and lead the Utah Grizzlies to a 4-2 victory over the Phoenix RoadRunners before 4,539 at the E-Center in ECHL action Saturday.

The two clubs combined for four power play goals in the first period alone. Utah (10-3-0) struck first when Anthony Battaglia slammed the puck past an out-of-position goaltender Mike Mole 8:09 into the first period on a two-man advantage power play to give the Grizzlies a 1-0 lead. Brad Herauf extended the lead to 2-0 on the same power play at 9:30 of the period when he received the give-and-go pass from Travis Rycroft in the slot and slipped the puck through Mole. The RoadRunners (3-8-2) would counter on their first power play of the game. Captain Dean Tiltgen collected Blake Robson's rebound in the slot and fired a back-hand shot past Utah goaltender Justin Eddy at 12:34 to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, Laux collected his third point of the period when his one-time drive from the left-wing circle split the pads of Mole at 17:29 on the power play to give the Grizzlies their two-goal lead back at 2-1.

BJ Gaustad brought the RoadRunners back to within a goal at 16:09 of the second period. Gaustad came from behind the net and pushed a wraparound shot past Eddy to make the score 3-2 heading into the second intermission.

After a back-and-forth third period, the RoadRunners took a chance by pulling Mole for the extra attacker, but Herauf sealed the victory for Utah with his second goal of the game, chipping it into the empty-net at 19:45 to make the final score 4-2.

Utah out-shot Phoenix 33-24. Mole stopped 29 shots in dropping to 0-6-2 on the season. The RoadRunners went 1-3 on the power play.

"UN-SWEET" NOVEMBER: Phoenix is 0-6-2 in the month of November. The RoadRunners have been outscored 33-17 in this month, averaging just 2.12 goals per game while surrendering an average of 4.12 goals against per contest. In this eight-game stretch, Phoenix has also been out-shot by the opposition by a significant margin of 315-187. That's an average of 23.37 shots for and 39.37 shots against per game.

BANGED UP BUNCH: A major factor in the RoadRunners' early season struggles have been injuries. Phoenix has already lost an ECHL-high 43 man games due to injuries. Forwards Ben Knopp, Miguel Lafleche, Joe Dusbabek, and defensemen Ed Hill and Paul Ballantyne are all currently on the injured reserve.

ROOKIE RELIEF: With the loss of several key players, the RoadRunners have been forced to rely on their 11 rookies for production. Center Chris Hodgson responded with his first goal of the season on Friday, while forward Blake Robson and defenseman Dusty Demianiuk each collected their first professional points with individual assists during the weekend series at Utah. RoadRunners rookies have combined to score five goals and chip in seven assists over the first 13 games. Meanwhile, rookie goaltender Mike Mole continued his stellar play despite suffering the two losses. Mole stopped 69 of 74 shots, including a 39-save effort on Friday.

CALL THE POWER COMPANY: After opening the season with nine power play goals in their first 26 chances, the RoadRunners have just seven power play goals in their last 44 opportunities on the man-advantage. Phoenix has been held without a power play goal in two out of their last three games. On the flip side, the RoadRunners are just one of four teams in the ECHL to have not allowed a shorthanded goal yet this season. Phoenix has been on the power play a total of 70 times in 2005-06.
