Philips concludes historic agreement with Alberta's Capital Health14 September 2005
Philips Electronics Ltd., today announced that is has signed a $70 million (CAD) agreement with Capital Health, Canada's largest academic health region, and the province of Alberta's largest employer. The agreement will provide improved patient care and increased access to diagnostic equipment for more than 1.6 million people across central and northern Alberta. Under the terms of the multi-year deal - one of the largest agreements of its kind ever concluded in Canada - Philips will provide Capital Health with advanced medical technology to diagnose, treat and prevent disease, and will also support the regional health authority's strategic development by devoting Philips resources to assist in training, education and medical research. "Increasingly, healthcare providers are looking for more than innovative new technologies and products, they are looking for solutions that make it easier for medical personnel to deliver great care, and which are designed with the patient experience in mind," said Jouko Karvinen, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Philips Medical Systems. "We are delighted to bring to Capital Health our advanced patient and user-friendly medical systems." The agreement will help Capital Health make the management of healthcare efficient and effective. Specific areas covered in the purchase agreement include Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Patient Monitoring, X-Ray/Angiography and Fluoroscopy. Included in the agreement is the Philips Gemini GXL PET CT scanner, which combines the best of Philips PET and CT molecular imaging capabilities to help clinicians accurately diagnose abnormalities early in the progression of disease. One of nine health regions in Alberta, Capital Health's mandate includes providing health services to more than 1.6 million residents within central and northern Alberta and Canada's northwest, ensuring reasonable, responsive access to quality health services for all individuals and communities. "This innovative agreement is clearly a breakthrough and demonstrates how the Canadian healthcare sector and medical industry leaders can work together strategically to improve people's lives by offering the latest cutting-edge diagnostic and monitoring technology," said Capital Health President and Chief Executive Officer Sheila Weatherill. "This enhances the patient experience, and further improves our ability to offer the very best front line care in a more timely manner." Capital Health selected Philips after a three-month review of competitive proposals submitted by several leading global medical equipment providers. "We appreciate the breadth, innovation, and quality of the Philips medical technology, and Philips' demonstrated ability to provide exceptional service over the lifetime of the contract," added Weatherill. "When Capital Health first shared their vision with us, we were immediately struck by the linkages and similarities in our respective philosophies," said Iain Burns, CEO of Philips Electronics Ltd. (Philips Canada). "I am proud to say that this agreement represents Philips and Capital Health's shared vision and dedication to truly first-class health care." For Capital Health, the agreement introduces a strategic approach to equipment acquisition within the region, replacing the traditional approach that has been used in the past. Among the many benefits it will deliver include making some types of diagnostic and monitoring equipment standard within the region, reducing the acquisition times for purchases and providing leading-edge technology to support patient care.
