Movers Find Hooking Up Their TV as Important as Getting Dinner on the Table25 July 2005
Since moving is one of the most stressful activities in a person's life, it's no wonder Americans are finding comfort in daily rituals, including cozying up to their favorite movie or TV show -- first and foremost! According to the Cable Gets Movin' survey,* more than half of cable consumers (60%) rank getting their TV service hooked up next to getting dinner on the table (61%), and more important than finding local businesses (45%) or decorating (44%).
"Moving can be just as stressful as starting a new job or buying a new car," explains relocation expert and author of "Will This Place Ever Feel Like Home?," Leslie Levine. "It's important to have a plan. Set up and unpack the things that are most important to you first to help make your house feel like home."
AVOID THE CHAOS OF MULTIPLE CALLS
Regardless if it's remembering to shut off the utilities or notify the post office, movers have many details to manage when leaving an old home and entering a new one. According to the survey, the majority of movers report disconnecting (78%) and connecting (84%) up to five services when they last moved.
"Changing over fundamental services increases the already high level of hassle and anxiety associated with moving, explains Levine. "With one call to your local cable company prior to your move, digital cable, high-speed Internet, and even phone service in some areas, can be yours when you arrive in your new home."
If you've already moved or want to become a new cable customer, the new toll-free Cable Movers Hotline(SM) (877-9TV-MOVE) processes the transfer between the existing and new cable provider to create a seamless transition without moving heavy hardware, set-top boxes or modems. Cable companies also will install all equipment for you in one visit, making the transition easier than ever before.
Levine, who has relocated several times herself, understands movers' common frustrations and has these three simple tips to make the move as easy as possible for the whole family. -- Make Moving Fun. Kids can commemorate the move by becoming the family photographer. Give your child a digital camera and encourage a photo shoot of the new space. Later, e-mail the photos to family and friends or make a scrapbook of the exciting event. -- Connect to the Community. One of the best ways to get acclimated to a new community is learning about it before the move. Check out local news and entertainment online and research fun family activities such as art museums and zoos, which may offer a family membership at introductory discounted rates. -- Phone Home. Family and friends want to know how you're doing after the move, so pick up the phone and give them an update. Instead of choosing phone service through a traditional landline operator, try cable phone - the newest service in the cable roster, which allows you to call anyone, anywhere, regardless of their phone technology and consumers get an added bonus of potential cost savings. ON DEMAND HELPS YOU UNWIND FROM THE UNPACKING GRIND
It's no surprise, more than half of survey respondents (58%) listed packing and unpacking as the top moving hassle. Levine recommends taking a break and not overdoing it by tuning to a favorite comedy to lift your spirits with Cable On Demand, an exclusive service offered with digital cable. Or, check-out a useful DIY show to get some home improvement tips while you work to make your place feel like home even faster.
BENEFITS OF MAKING A MOVE WITH CABLE Installing cable service in your home is a breeze. In fact, people are nearly twice as likely to choose basic or digital cable (13%) than satellite (7%) in terms of new subscription services in the home, according to the survey.
Digital cable offers a range of services, including increased entertainment options like Cable On Demand; digital video recorders built right into the set-top box and local high-definition television channels; cable phone service with the same great features like caller ID and voicemail; and high-speed Internet connections of up to 75 times faster than a traditional dial-up. Moving can be expensive, but by taking all three services from your local cable company, you'll get the convenience of one bill, and you may be able to spend your savings on something for your new home.
