MicroPlanet HVR(TM) Product to be Deployed to Improve the Efficiency of the US Pacific Northwest Electric Distribution System22 September 2005
MicroPlanet Technology Corp. (TSXV:MP) ("MicroPlanet" or the "Company"), a developer of distributed-energy technologies to improve electric power grid reliability and efficiency announced today a deployment program of the Company's High Voltage Regulators(TM) (HVR(TM)) to improve the efficiency of the US Pacific Northwest electric distribution system. Approximately 500 MicroPlanet HVR(TM) units are expected to be installed across 11 electric utilities serving over 4 million customers in Washington, Oregon and Idaho. The aggregate value of these installations is approximately US$1 million. The HVR(TM) is a point-of-consumption voltage regulator that is installed at the delivery interface between the electric grid and the utilities customer. The installation is part of a multi-year initiative to improve the efficiency of the Pacific Northwest electric distribution system through a technology transfer program conducted by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance ("the Alliance"). The Alliance program - called the Distribution Efficiency Initiative overseeing the installation, is a non-profit group of electric utilities, state governments, public interest groups and efficiency industry representatives. "Environmental concerns, ever increasing power demand, citing concerns related to new transmission infrastructure and a decrease in spending for new power generation has made it imperative that utilities pursue new technologies that maximize our current power supply," said Jeff Harris, Senior Manager of Project Development for the Alliance (www.nwalliance.org). "MicroPlanet's products will reduce power consumption, effectively increasing available capacity for the servicing electric utility without capital investment in generation or transmission infrastructure. As a result the MicroPlanet High Voltage Regulator(TM) (HVR(TM)) offers the hope of a more efficient grid that will reduce the amount of energy that is wasted in the distribution process." "Existing electric grid and regulatory standards in North America still operate under a model developed in the 1950's. MicroPlanet's electronic voltage regulation products enable an immediate transition from the 1950's to the distributed energy grid of the 21st century. MicroPlanet's products more precisely regulate voltage; capturing energy wasted while delivering power to electric utility customers. This could reduce greenhouse gas emissions for each home by up to 1 ton per year, or millions of tons per year across the United States, which amounts to a major improvement during this era of global warming," said Brian Reidy, CEO of MicroPlanet. "Clearly, customers, regulators, utilities, environmental groups and government share a common urgency to squeeze the most from this aging power infrastructure." MicroPlanet's High Voltage Regulator(TM) provides an energy efficiency tool that can be rapidly deployed for peak load reduction, conservation and an interface for distributed generation such as fuel cells, wind turbines, solar devices or microturbines. The HVR(TM) reduces energy consumption by improving the efficiency of the existing connection to the utility distribution infrastructure and can help reduce operating and capital expenditures for electric utilities by reducing exposure to the spot market for power and offering a significantly lower cost alternative to traditional generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. HVR(TM) is the fastest and cheapest way to increase grid capacity, with no environmental impact.
About MicroPlanet Technology Corp.
