Maren Ord set to release acoustic CD Pretty Things on November 21st7 November 2006
It might be the fact that she's been singing since she was barely standing. It could have something to do with the crystal clear, soulful voice that she wields like a torch. Or it could be that she was a major hit at radio, a Juno nominee and a veteran of the touring circuit all before she was 19 years old. Regardless, Maren Ord is definitely unforgettable, and with the release of her third album, the acoustic-leaning Pretty Things, she looks to explore a softer, more intimate side of herself. With a great pop voice that effortlessly flows from angst to sweetness, Ord's debut album Waiting (Nettwerk, 2000) produced three singles and two videos during its reign on the charts and saw Ord on both the 1998 and 1999 Lilith Fair Tour. Ord effortlessly earned a reputation as a solid songwriter with exceptional skills on piano, keyboards, and acoustic guitar, attracting the attention of one Canadian rock legend. Randy Bachman teamed up with Ord on her 2004 release, Not Today, and Ord continued to grow as a writer by delivering rock-influenced pop songs and touring relentlessly across North America. But with Pretty Things, Ord proves that her artistic journey continues as she leaves rock and pop behind and veers into a more acoustic and pensive world. "I wrote "Who Am I" late at night after going through some old home videos," remembers Ord. "As I was watching some of the things that my parents had taped over the years when my career started (interviews, music videos), I began thinking, well, what have I accomplished through all this? And at first I was kind of feeling sorry for myself for the things I hadn't accomplished. But the more I thought about it, the more grateful I became. I realized that a lot of people do not get the chance to do half the things I have been able to do. So, I guess it turned into a gratitude song - me figuring out what I've become and what I can become." Ord has always written about life as she sees it - a life full of hope fueled by finding love, learning from loss, recognizing beauty and courage yet still aware of the fear, loneliness and uncertainty in the world. "The album and title track "Pretty Things" is about not settling for someone who makes you feel pretty," ponders Ord. "Pretty is such a short-term word. Pretty fades. Beauty goes much deeper, revealing itself over time. Love is the same way." Maren Ord - Pretty Things will be released in stores on November 21, 2006 (Fontana/Universal). "New music from Edmonton native Maren Ord has been a long time coming, but great things come to those who wait." - Canadian Music Network "She is a more gifted musician than Alanis, sings a lot better than Michelle Branch and writes songs sharper than Pink and Avril combined." - Las Vegas Weekly Read: www.marenord.com Listen: www.myspace.com/marenord For further information: MEDIA CONTACT CANADA: Jennifer Fritz, Frontside, (604) 648-2782, jen@frontside.ca, www.frontside.ca
