Known for their mature interpretation of the greatworks and flawless technique, the Jerusalem Quartet returnto New Zealand to open Chamber Music New Zealand¹s 2006Celebrity Season in Auckland, Wellington andChristchurch. Shostakovich¹s music has a particularresonance for the Jerusalem Quartet as three of the memberswere brought up in the former Soviet Union. "Shostakovich'smusic is a significant part of our lives and is very muchrelevant to us today. His music demonstrates the truth oflife under Stalin; everyone's struggle to survive, howeveryone lived in constant fear. Even under the oppressiveconditions of the Soviet era, Shostakovich had the courageto express the hidden strength of his people in his music. He does so with extraordinary dramatic feeling in a spiritof resistance and freedom. His music became a source ofmoral support to those who were persecuted or suffered inother ways." "As we play his music, we interpret themusing our personal feeling and experiences. Having theopportunity to explore new countries, playing in new andfamous concert halls, meeting new audience and sharing ourlove of music with people all over the world is so enrichingfor all ofus."
