Good Progress on Upgrading Transmission Capacity to the Topof the South Island -- 21 Apr 2006 A significant capitalworks programme proving long-term benefits to NorthCanterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and Buller is nearingcompletion. Transpower, the owner and operator of thenational electricity grid, is making good progress onplanned work to increase the capacity of the National Gridin the top of the South Island. Since October 2005Transpower has been working on a number of transmissionupgrade projects in the top of the South Island costing morethan $60 million. Substations at both Waipara andCulverden are being upgraded to 220 kV interconnections anda new 220 kV circuit has been constructed between Islingtonand Kikiwa, by stringing new conductors (wires) on existingtowers. A new 110 kV circuit between Stoke and Blenheim,again on existing towers, is also being constructed. Thenew third 220 kV circuit from Islington to Kikiwa willincrease security of supply and the capacity of the linesinto the top of the South Island by approximately 50%. Thiswill resolve the transmission capacity issues into theNelson and Buller region for the foreseeable future. Thenew third 110 kV circuit into Blenheim will provide 50%greater transmission capacity into the Marlboroughregion. Activity is now intensifying, as the final work isundertaken to allow all new substation equipment andcircuits to be commissioned by June. During this workthere will be occasions when some areas in the top of theSouth Island are temporarily supplied by a reduced number oftransmission circuits. Transpower is co-ordinating withlines companies and generators in the region to maintainsecurity of supply during this necessary process. Solomons: NZ Army and Police off to Honiara - Two RNZAF aircraft will depart Whenuapai midmorning today, bound for Honiara. An RNZAF Boeing 757 will carry 30 New Zealand Police and travel via Christchurch, where it will uplift 25 infantry soldiers from Burnham Military Camp. An RNZAF Hercules C130 will travel via Fiji to assist in transporting additional Fijian Police personnel to Honiara. It is expected the first aircraft will land shortly after 5pm (New Zealand time) and remain on the ground for a short time only. See...
