Charleston, SC. Gavin Glinton scored twice on his debut as the Charleston Battery defeated the Virginia Beach Mariners by a score of three goals to none Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 4,265. Goalkeeper, Dusty Hudock recorded five saves en-route to his 63rd career Charleston Battery shutout. The Battery started strongly and were 1-0 up after only nine minutes. Glinton latched onto a loose ball ten yards inside the Mariners half. He outpaced his marker and as Mariners goalkeeper Matt Nelson approached, Glinton slotted the ball into the goal. The Mariners tried to respond in the 12th minute as midfielder Tim O'Neill broke a tackle just outside the box. He fired a left-footed attempt at the goal but missed wide left. Former Charleston striker Greg Simmonds had a chance in the 39th minute. Midfielder Felix Brilliant whipped a good cross in from the right side, Simmonds rose to meet the pass but his header flew high. Glinton doubled Charleston's lead in the 64th minute. Winger Omar Daley weighted a pass between two defenders into Glinton's path. Nelson again came off his line to close the angle but was caught flat-footed as Glinton stroked the ball past him into the goal. Two minutes later it was 3-0 after Mariners defender Steve Danbusky scored an own-goal. Glinton played the ball down the left side-line to midfielder Chris Corcoran. Corcoran hit a shot-cross towards the back-post but it struck Danbusky on its way through and ricocheted into the goal. Battery goalkeeper Dusty Hudock made several saves as the Mariners pressed forward towards the end of the game. In the 90th minute substitute forward McColm Cephas hit a stinging shot at the goal but Hudock smothered the ball as he dropped to his left. The Battery is home again next Sunday night as Miami FC visits Blackbaud Stadium, gates open at 5 PM; kick off is set for 6 PM.
