Gamma Medica-Ideas Installs FLEX(TM) Pre-Clinical Imaging System at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center9 September 2005
Gamma Medica-Ideas announced today the installation of one of its FLEX™ Pre-Clinical Imaging Systems at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
The dual modality SPECT/CT system will be used in the laboratory of Dr. Juri G. Gelovani, Chairman of the Department of Experimental Diagnostic Imaging at M.D. Anderson. Dr. Gelovani is one of the world's leading authorities on molecular imaging. His research is focused on developing new approaches to molecular imaging that will help detect cancer earlier and enable care teams to assess the extent of the disease sooner, making a significant impact on the diagnosis, therapy, and management of cancer.
"The advantages of multi-modality imaging instruments are widely recognized in the radiological molecular imaging community. The FLEX Pre-Clinical Imaging System is very reliable and provides high resolution SPECT images that are very accurately fused with corresponding CT images," said Dr. Gelovani. "We will use the system in the pre-clinical phase of development of novel radiolabeled agents for imaging tumor-specific biomarkers for tumor detection and selection of effective therapies, for monitoring of treatment response, for biodistribution studies of novel radiolabeled tumor-targeted drugs, and for imaging genetic and cellular therapies of cancer."
"M.D. Anderson is one of the leading medical institutions in the world," said David W. Wilk, Gamma Medica's Senior Vice President of Sales. "We are pleased that Dr. Gelovani has chosen our FLEX Pre-Clinical system to help him pursue his cutting-edge research."
The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is located in Houston, Texas, on the campus of the Texas Medical Center. It is one of the United States' original three Comprehensive Cancer Centers designated by the National Cancer Act of 1971 and is one of 52 Comprehensive Cancer Centers today. It has ranked number one four times in the past five years in U.S. News and World Report's "America's Best Hospitals" survey.
About Gamma Medica-Ideas
Gamma Medica-Ideas (GM-I) was formed by the recent merger of Gamma Medica, Inc., based in Northridge, CA, and Ideas ASA of Oslo, Norway. GM-I designs, develops and manufactures next-generation imaging systems for both clinical and pre-clinical applications. The company is a worldwide leader in multimodality pre-clinical imaging. GM-I was first to market with MicroSPECT®, and its X-SPECT® system is the market leader in the pre-clinical SPECT category. GM-I's X-PET™ system has the highest sensitivity and largest axial field of view among pre-clinical PET systems. The company's X-O™ system is a standalone micro-CT instrument that can perform full body scans on a wide range of test subjects in less than a minute, making it one of the fastest such systems in the industry. All three systems share a common gantry and are part of the company's FLEX™ platform of pre-clinical imaging systems. Any two systems can be combined in the common gantry, as can all three. GM-I's pre-clinical imaging systems are deployed by medical researchers and drug companies that use in-vivo imaging techniques and molecular markers to dramatically speed up studies of disease progression and therapy.
GM-I is also the leading provider of integrated front-end electronics to the global nuclear imaging equipment industry. The company develops and produces key electrical components and systems, such as Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), detector modules, and complete camera heads built with solid-state technology. It also supplies customized components containing semiconductor sensors combined with advanced readout electronics. The company's products are used in a variety of industries, including medical imaging, security, and safety.
