Fujitsu to Feature Low-Power, High-Speed 10Gbps Ethernet Prototype Board at Server Blade Summit 2006

13 April 2006

Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) will make a presentation on the PICMG-defined, ATCA standard design practice, and feature its 10-Gigabit Ethernet prototype board at the Server Blade Summit 2006 in Garden City, California (Hyatt Regency Orange County, booth 807).

The Fujitsu MB87Q3140 single-chip 10Gbps Ethernet switch will be demonstrated on Celestica's ATCA 10 Gigabit Ethernet hub AMC carrier blade. The Fujitsu switch represents a best-of-breed silicon systems solution for advanced network server, blade server and storage applications. The switch, which is now available as a prototype board, features:

* Compliance with PICMG3.0 and 3.1 (10Gbps Ethernet)

* Compliance with AMC.0 and AMC.2 Type E2 (Gigabit Ethernet) and Type 5

(10Gbps Ethernet)

* Support for up to two full-height AMC modules

* RTM interface

* Optional IPMI software and CGLinux Board Support Package (BSP).

Tutorial on 10Gbps Ethernet Data Fabric for ATCA Applications

Fujitsu will also present a detailed breakout session on backplane interconnect protocols in the Special Open Tutorial on AdvancedTCA (ATCA). The tutorial, "10Gbps Ethernet Data Fabric for ATCA Applications," will be hosted from 2 to 5 PM on Thursday, April 20.

The promise of PICMG3.x is that, by standardizing hardware components such as the backplane interconnect, the current supply chain model and product time-to-market can be improved and hardware R&D costs reduced. To date, PICMG3.x has defined backplane interconnect protocols that include Ethernet, InfiniBand, ASI, PCI Express and RapidIO. This tutorial will explain why Ethernet -- and in particular 10 Gbps Ethernet -- is the optimum backplane interconnect for the majority of AdvancedTCA applications.

Luan Nguyen, staff application engineer for Fujitsu Microelectronics America, will describe the current suite of backplane interconnect protocols and their implementation in the blade server environment, as well as examine trends for protocol extensions, interoperability and overall migration challenges within the ATCA environment.

"We are pleased to represent the leading edge of ATCA standards, with our 10GbE switching products underscoring our leadership commitment to the ATCA architecture and to bladed server applications," stated Keith Horn, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. "Fujitsu's MB87Q3140 10Gbps Ethernet switch-on-chip products are becoming the chipsets of choice for a growing number of prominent blade server OEMs and ODMs, including Celestica. We are working closely with these customers to further advance the state of the art in ATCA-based systems."

Fujitsu recently published a technical backgrounder outlining the use of its 10-Gigabit Ethernet switching technology for applications based on the Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMC) and the underlying ATCA, including wireless backhaul, wireless base stations, IPTV, and routers.
