This feature actually blocks the completion of negative-to-negative current in batteries that are connected in series, thereby virtually eliminating potential damage and premature discharge from reverse current in incorrectly installed batteries.
To prevent the possibility of two negative terminals from touching each other if they are improperly inserted, Fuji Novel LR20 (D-size) and LR14 (C-size) alkaline batteries have specially-designed resin protrusions on their negative face to ensure that negative-to-negative contact is incomplete, and therefore no current conduction can occur. This feature prevents both the inadvertent and the deliberate installation of batteries where both negative terminals can touch, which, at worst, can send a potentially harmful surge into the device.
