Emulex Introduces New FibreSpy 4 Gb/s Speed Agile Switch Boxes

4 March 2006

Emulex Corporation (NYSE:ELX), the most trusted name in storage networking connectivity, today announced the general availability of its new line of FibreSpy(tm) Embedded Storage Switches that offer 4 Gb/s frame level switched performance and per-port speed agility. The new 4 Gb/s FibreSpy Model 850 and 870 switches are box-based, drop-in solutions, which are ideal for "root switch" and "fully-switched architecture" implementations and provide flexible storage system infrastructure for OEMs that want to enable tiered storage environments.

The FibreSpy Models 850 and 870, Emulex's third generation of embedded storage switches, are application compatible with previous generation InSpeed(tm) Embedded Storage Switches. In addition, the FibreSpy Models 850 and 870 allow system vendors to reduce overall costs by removing the need for out-of-band management networks. Using industry standards, the new Emulex switches provide support for in-band SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) management, allowing for seamless communications over the Fibre Channel network.

"Following on the success of InSpeed, Emulex's FibreSpy technology delivers speed agile frame switched functionality in the back-end of enterprise storage systems," said Mike Smith, executive vice president of worldwide marketing for Emulex. "With today's new FibreSpy-based root switches, for the first time our OEM customers can now offer a highly flexible solution to end-users that want to intermix 4 Gb/s high performance SBODs with cost effective 2 Gb/s near-line storage within a single storage system."

Emulex's leading embedded storage switching technology improves storage system reliability, availability, serviceability (RAS) and performance while scaling by bringing switched connectivity inside disk and tape-based storage systems. FibreSpy root switch implementations place speed agile switched connectivity between the storage controller (or NAS head) and the drive shelves within the storage array, and can be similarly deployed into tape libraries.

"To meet businesses goals, businesses are consolidating their storage systems while working to boost capacity, performance and business continuity in their mission-critical application environments," said Richard Villars, Vice President of Storage Systems Research at IDC. "Solutions like Emulex's new FibreSpy Embedded Storage Switches will help storage systems suppliers build solutions that meet these objectives while still achieving the cost savings associated with deployment of tiered storage applications."

Both the FibreSpy Model 850 and 870 Embedded Storage Switches offer a number of advanced features and are RoHS-5 (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) and WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) compliant to meet European Union lead-free and waste initiatives.
