The 2000square-metre Dick Smith Electronics PowerHouse consumerelectronics mega store will be officially opened in Manukaucity this weekend by the acting mayor, Councillor AnneCandy. The company s New Zealand general manager, StuMeadows, says that it is a significant step for the companyin New Zealand. "The Dick Smith Electronics PowerHousestores are quite different from our standard stores," hesaid. "Traditionally, we have been about supplyingtechnology and electronics equipment to trade and homeusers, but technology and home entertainment are rapidlyconverging and we ve identified a real opportunity in themarket to bring these products together under oneroof." Products include high-end entertainment equipment,including televisions, media centres, stereos, car audiosystems and gaming; digital cameras and a printing service;computers and telephone technology; and small homeappliances. The concept has already proved popular inAustralia, with 18 Dick Smith Electronics PowerHouse storesnow operating. Mr Meadows said that the New Zealandmarket was tested in Hamilton first. "We opened in May2004, but within a year it was obvious that we needed tonearly double the trading area, and we opened the expandedstore in August last year. At the same time, we startedlooking for suitable sites in other areas," hesaid. Manukau was chosen for the second store because itis the largest and fastest growing city in the country, anda suitable site with good parking was available close to thecity centre. Other stores will follow. Dick SmithElectronics has 52 company stores in New Zealand, and 13authorised distributors.
