Dick Smith Electronics turns on the power Dick SmithElectronics is about to throw the switch on a new era ofconsumer electronics retailing in New Zealand. The 2000square-metre Dick Smith Electronics PowerHouse consumerelectronics mega store will be officially opened in Manukaucity this weekend by the acting mayor, Councillor AnneCandy. The company's New Zealand general manager, StuMeadows, says that it is a significant step for the companyin New Zealand. "The Dick Smith Electronics PowerHousestores are quite different from our standard stores," hesaid. "Traditionally, we have been about supplyingtechnology and electronics equipment to trade and homeusers, but technology and home entertainment are rapidlyconverging and we've identified a real opportunity in themarket to bring these products together under one roof."Products include high-end entertainment equipment, includingtelevisions, media centres, stereos, car audio systems andgaming; digital cameras and a printing service; computersand telephone technology; and small home appliances. Theconcept has already proved popular in Australia, with 18Dick Smith Electronics PowerHouse stores now operating. Mr Meadows said that the New Zealand market was tested inHamilton first. "We opened in May 2004, but within ayear it was obvious that we needed to nearly double thetrading area, and we opened the expanded store in Augustlast year. At the same time, we started looking for suitablesites in other areas," he said. Manukau was chosen for thesecond store because it is the largest and fastest growingcity in the country, and a suitable site with good parkingwas available close to the city centre. Other stores willfollow. Dick Smith Electronics has 52 company stores in NewZealand, and 13 authorised distributors.
