CIBER Implements Paperless EDI Solution for University of Alberta28 July 2006
CIBER Canada, a division of CIBER, Inc. (NYSE: CBR), today announced it has completed the implementation of an electronic data interchange (EDI) interface for Oracle's PeopleSoft enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for the University of Alberta, one of Canada's foremost research-intensive universities. The University, which serves more than 35,500 students and offers more than 350 undergraduate and graduate programs, now has a standard method for managing electronic vendor invoices. The project helps the University complete its transition from a paper-based legacy system to an electronic-based invoicing system to reduce costs and shorten the invoice payment process. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20010927/CBRLOGO ) Prior to the project, the University used a custom non-EDI interface to manage electronic vendor invoices. As more vendors have moved to electronic invoicing in the last few years, the University realized it must be able to manage a more standard, less customized electronic data format to accommodate the largest number of vendors possible. CIBER Canada was selected to implement an EDI interface for Oracle's PeopleSoft Accounts Payable Vendor. As a result of the new interface, the University can now receive and load invoices in X.12 format -- a standard electronic data sharing format -- and via many methods of communication. Shipping information for freight invoices and merchant information for corporate credit card invoices can be tracked electronically, saving countless hours during department audits. The new system offers on-line, real-time reporting and data validation features, which have reduced data entry errors and further streamlined the invoice vouchering and payment processes. Perhaps most importantly, University staff members no longer need to manually enter invoice information, a process which required one day per week of staff time. Invoices are received electronically, providing substantial cost savings through the elimination of manual effort required for paper invoices. CIBER is the leader in the U.S. and Canadian Oracle/PeopleSoft higher education markets, having implemented Oracle's PeopleSoft enterprise applications in eight Canadian higher education institutions. More than 150 institutions in the United States and Canada -- approximately 25 percent of Oracle's PeopleSoft higher education customers -- have worked with CIBER to implement and/or upgrade their software. CIBER has also assisted higher education clients in Mexico and the United Kingdom. "The combination of CIBER Canada's strong technical credentials with PeopleSoft and their significant higher education expertise is rare, and something we value highly," said Shelagh Hohm, Director of Administrative Information Systems (AIS), University of Alberta. "The CIBER Canada team understood not just the technical aspects of the project, but the broader picture, helping us to streamline operations and reduce costs, eliminating the tedious manual tasks our staff dreaded. The team smoothly completed the project on time, helping us meet our goals." "The University is well positioned for future technological changes," said Mike Dillon, Senior Vice President of CIBER Enterprise Solution's Higher Education Practice. "With the new system, the University can better integrate external applications and new technology, while providing enhanced services and maintaining an efficient operation." Based in Edmonton, the University of Alberta employs more than 9,000 faculty and staff and has an annual operating budget of $1 billion, of which nearly $420 million was designated for research in the 2004/2005 academic year.
