BSNL Expands Wireless Network with technology Provided by Nortel

20 August 2005

In a launch ceremony held earlier today, BSNL executives announced plans to expand their service offering and allow customers to use GSM/GPRS/EDGE mobile handsets to surf the Web and to send and receive e-mails and personalized multimedia messages virtually 'anytime, anywhere.'

This expansion project, officially launched in Chennai by Thiru Dayanidhi Maran, India's Minister for Communications and Information Technology, is part of the estimated US$500 million contract announced in December 2004 between Nortel and BSNL to enhance and expand BSNL's GSM/GPRS/EDGE network in southern and eastern India.

"BSNL recognizes the increasingly vital role wireless technology is playing in the personal and business communications of millions of Indians," said Mr. A.K. Sinha, chairman and managing director, BSNL.

"This current expansion of our digital wireless network in southern India represents a major step in BSNL's commitment to ensuring that our customers benefit from the most advanced communication services available," said Mr. G.S. Grover, director in charge of the cellular project, BSNL.

"We are delighted to be working with BSNL in providing high quality wireless services to enhance the BSNL subscriber experience in south India," said Sue Spradley, president, Global Operations, Nortel. "We look forward to a continued association with BSNL as it grows its networks and provides advanced digital mobile services across India."

In this initial phase implementation, Nortel has deployed an end-to-end GSM/GPRS/EDGE solution - including GSM radio base stations, mobile switching centers and intelligent network capabilities - to provide wireless voice and data services with carrier-grade network reliability.

The deployment also includes Nortel's GSM/UMTS BTS 18000, which is a high-capacity, high-density dual mode base station designed to support both GSM and UMTS wireless technology standards. The BTS 18000 also supports HSDPA technology without hardware upgrades.

Nortel is also providing BSNL with professional services and support, including project management, commissioning and installation.

Nortel GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks are characterized by high voice quality, unparalleled security, unequalled radio performance and leading-edge wireless voice, data and fax features.

Nortel was the first wireless networks supplier to successfully complete a TL 9000 consolidation registration across an end-to-end portfolio of hardware, software and services for HSDPA, UMTS and GSM wireless infrastructure solutions.

India is among the fastest growing telecommunications markets in the world. In this country of over one billion people, teledensity now stands at approximately 9.86 percent or approximately 107 million people with telephones.
