Battery stops Impact with 3-1 win

15 May 2006

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery defeated the Montreal Impact by a score of three goals to one Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 3,124. Ben Hollingsworth, Omar Daley and Gavin Glinton all scored as the Battery notched a win over Montreal for this first time since the 2003 season.

The Battery improves to 2-1-0, 7 points, 2nd position in the USL First Division. The loss was Montreal's first of the season as they drop to 1-1-1, 4 points, 6th place. Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggans recorded six saves in his second start for the Club.

Montreal took the game to Charleston from the outset and forced Wiggans into action in the 7th minute. The ball was worked to forward Mauricio Salles just inside the box; Salles spun and shot but Wiggans dropped quickly to smother the shot.

In the 38th minute the Battery were awarded a free-kick in the Montreal half; midfielder Jeff Matteo swept in a deep cross to Ben Hollingsworth who kept the ball in play just wide of the goal. In the ensuing scramble the referee saw illegal contact and blew for a PK. Hollingsworth took the spot-kick and slotted neatly past goalkeeper Greg Sutton for the first goal.

Charleston doubled its advantage in the 60th minute with some excellent interplay at the edge of the box. The ball was worked wide to Luke Vercollone who played a square ball to Hollingsworth 18 yards out. Hollingsworth controlled the pass before rolling the ball out to Daley on the right. Daley cut inside his marker and fired past Sutton and into the goal.

The Impact fought back in the 71st minute as midfielder Lars Lyssand played a looping cross to the back of the box. Substitute forward Daniel Antoniuk reacted first to the loose ball and lashed the ball into the back of the goal.

With the game in the balance the Battery pushed forward again and scored a third goal in the 81st minute. Substitute midfielder Stephen Armstrong whipped a cross in from wide on the left. Forward Gavin Glinton met the pass with a superb diving header that re-directed the ball into the goal.

The Charleston Battery is home again next Saturday night for a match versus the Puerto Rico Islanders; kick off is set for 7:30 PM.
