Barracudas Split Weekend Road Games

2 February 2007

The Jacksonville Barracudas will be looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd at the Veterans Memorial Arena this weekend, after splitting two road games on Friday and Saturday night.

Saturday's game against the Fayetteville FireAntz completed a string of five consecutive road games, over which the Barracudas achieved a solid record of two wins, two losses, and a loss in overtime.

Friday night the Cudas faced the daunting task of facing the Richmond Renegades, who seem to always play well at home, in the midst of six game winning streak. Dean Jackson struck the first blow for the Renegades, beating Cudas' goaltender Ryan Person just 36 seconds into the first period.

Barracudas' forward Jim Murphy capitalized on a tripping penalty to Renegade Andre Gill, by taking a pass from KC Caudill and putting it past 'Gades star goaltender Doug Groenestege, to even the score.

The teams battled to a scoreless draw in the second period, and well into the third. However, at the 11:21 mark of the third, it was KC Caudill again setting up a goal, getting the puck to Jason Cassels, who beat Groenestege and gave the Cudas the lead for good.

Person and Murphy were standouts for the Cudas, who took sole possession of fifth place with the win.

The Barracudas would not be alone in fifith place for long, however, as the road trip took them into Fayetteville to meet a hungry FireAntz squad, the team that at the time was just two points back of the Cudas.

The FireAntz scored early and often, with forward Tim Velemirovich setting up all four goals in the first period, two to Dylan Row to get the scoring started, then to Josh Welter and Robert Sich. The four goals chased Person from the Barracudas' net between periods, as Barracudas' Coach Rick Allain turned to Matt Meacham.

The second period did not go much better for the Cudas, with the FireAntz scoring three more goals. The bookends were second-goals of the night from Robert Sich and Josh Welter, while Rob Meanchoff picked up his first in between.

The lone positive for the Cudas came at the 11:26 mark of the third period, as defenseman Bryan Gent scored his first goal of the season, from Murphy and Captain Greg LeColst. Meacham also put in a solid period of work, stopping all 17 shots in the third.

The Barracudas finally get to play on home ice on Friday night, as they face the Pee Dee Cyclones at the Veterans Memorial Arena. Game time is 7:05pm, and it's another Sam's Club Night, so fans who show their Sam's Club ID at the Arena Box Office will receive up to four $13 tickets for just $7 a piece. However, it's back to the road following the game, as they travel to Columbus to face the always-tough Cottonmouths squad.
