Albertans encouraged to take old computers and TVs to local depots for recycling22 October 2005
A new public awareness campaign kicking-off during Waste Reduction Week encourages Albertans to dig out their old televisions and computers from their basements and garages and take them to their local depots for recycling. The campaign, being coordinated by the Alberta Recycling Management Authority, will use radio, television and print ads to encourage people to participate in Alberta's electronics recycling program, the first of its kind in Canada. "Alberta's e-waste recycling program leads the country," said Environment Minister Guy Boutilier. "Electronics are resources that are too good to waste. I encourage Albertans to continue their commitment to waste reduction by recycling their electronics year-round." Albertans can drop off old televisions and computers free-of-charge at more than 100 municipal collection sites throughout the province. Alberta's five qualified recyclers (e-Cycle Solutions Inc., HMI Industries, Recycle- Logic Inc., Shanked Metals and Technotrash Alberta) pick up the electronics from the collection sites and process them into glass, metal and plastic, to make new products. Businesses wanting to get rid of their old electronics are encouraged to work directly with the qualified recyclers to have their electronics picked up and recycled. Recyclers are subject to stringent environmental, health and safety audits to ensure that materials are satisfactorily recycled. The program has recycled more than 1,500 tonnes of material up to June 30, 2005 - this represents more than 35,000 monitors, 31,000 computers, nearly 20,000 printers and 15,000 televisions.
